ImproveWell, a real-time digital platform for staff to improve health and care, and Southern Health and Social Care Trust in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, have been named finalist in the category of Best Employer for Staff Recognition and Engagement at The Nursing Times Workforce Awards 2023.

The partnership has been recognised for improving retention at the Rosebrook Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), part of Southern Health and Social Care Trust

The Rosebrook PICU had a significant problem with staff retention and there were problems with staff feeling disempowered and not listened to. The unit was caught in a cycle of trying the same solutions to challenges that were repeatedly reported. Staff morale was very low.

The team rolled out ImproveWell and a staff champion was appointed to encourage its uptake.

Deputy Charge Nurse, Leigh Ferris, said: “Two changes suggested through ImproveWell were creating new roles of Safety Nurse and Medication Nurse. These roles made things more efficient and freed up time and energy for everyone else to give their best to their roles. Without ImproveWell, these ideas may have been discussed but not recorded or put forward in a way that led to positive change.”

Following the implementation of ImproveWell, the team retained all staff members over a period of 12 months, and recruitment was more successful.

Lara Mott, CEO and Co-founder of ImproveWell, said: “This work demonstrates how frontline staff usually have the best solutions to problems, and how changing the way we engage staff can have a long-lasting impact on recruitment and retention.

“Being named finalist at the Nursing Times Workforce Awards shows what a fantastic job the Rosebrook team is doing. This is a brilliant example of compassionate leadership and engagement that others should take inspiration from.”
